Bespoke Bookcase Project – Dorking
Overview
This recent bespoke furniture commission was carried out for one of our long-standing clients in Dorking, Surrey, who has trusted us with multiple handmade furniture and fitted cabinet projects over the years. On this occasion, we were invited to design and manufacture a custom-fitted bookcase for a truly exceptional home — a property that was once owned by Sir Richard Branson https://militaocarpentryltd.com/bookcases/
The house itself is a beautiful and characterful period property, featuring soaring ceilings over four metres high and intricate architectural detailing. The client’s vision was to create a statement piece of made to measure cabinetry that offered generous storage, timeless elegance, and seamless integration with the existing interior. The completed project achieves exactly that — a refined, functional showpiece that enhances both the aesthetic and practical use of the room.
Design and Consultation Process
As with all our bespoke joinery and made to measure furniture commissions, the project began with an in-depth consultation to understand the client’s lifestyle, storage needs, and design preferences. We then developed detailed concept drawings and 3D visualisations to help the client picture the finished installation within the context of their space.
Following the initial presentation, we scheduled a Zoom consultation to discuss proportions, finishes, and functionality in depth. This collaborative design process ensures every client has full creative input before manufacturing begins — an approach we apply to all our bespoke fitted wardrobes, alcove units, and home office furniture projects. Final refinements were quickly made, resulting in a design that perfectly balanced practicality and aesthetic harmony.
Material Selection and Craftsmanship
For this made to measure bookcase, we selected 22mm Hydro Fugo Moisture-Resistant MDF — a premium material ideal for fitted cabinetry and bespoke wardrobes. This choice delivers excellent stability, durability, and a flawless painted finish. However, we also offer solid hardwoods, veneered panels, and specialist sheet materials for other commissions, depending on client preference and project style.
The design incorporated elegant Shaker-style panel doors, complementing the home’s period charm while maintaining a timeless aesthetic suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Each panel, shelf, and joint was crafted by our experienced carpenters using precision tools and hand-finishing techniques to guarantee consistency and quality. Attention to detail is at the heart of our work — from the subtle profiling of each door to the precise alignment of shelving.
Bespoke Ladder and Brass Detailing
Given the property’s impressive ceiling height, accessibility to the upper shelving was a key consideration. To address this, we designed and built a bespoke solid wood ladder system, gliding smoothly along a top-mounted brass track. The ladder’s handmade brass detailing not only adds strength but also introduces a luxurious accent that ties in beautifully with the client’s chosen paint tones and other fixtures throughout the home.
This functional yet decorative feature highlights how bespoke joinery can elevate both form and function — a principle we apply across our range of bespoke boot rooms, made to measure wardrobes, and home study furniture installations.
Finishing and Painting
Once construction was complete, the unit was professionally spray-finished in a bespoke colour mixed in-house. The high-performance satin finish enhances the texture of the joinery while offering durability suitable for daily use. Every surface was carefully prepared to achieve a smooth, long-lasting result — the hallmark of our handmade furniture craftsmanship.
Installation and Client Satisfaction
Our installation team fitted the unit with meticulous precision, paying close attention to alignment and scribing — essential when working within period homes. Every joint and panel was seamlessly integrated, creating a built-in look that feels as though it has always been part of the property.
The client was delighted with the finished piece, praising both its elegance and functionality. The result perfectly showcases how made to measure cabinets and bespoke fitted furniture can transform a space with both beauty and purpose.
Continued Demand in the Area
Since completing this project, we’ve received increasing enquiries from homeowners in Dorking, Horsham, and Newdigate for bespoke fitted wardrobes, alcove units, home offices, and made to measure cabinetry.
