Custom Hallway Storage Unit, Oxted

This is a recent project we carried out in Oxted, Surrey, for a wonderful customer who wanted a stylish yet practical solution for their hallway. The brief was clear — to create a made-to-measure storage unit that not only offered space to store shoes but also transformed the hallway into a more welcoming and characterful part of the home https://militaocarpentryltd.com/boot-rooms/.

The customer’s hallway was the first area guests saw when entering the property, so it was important that the new joinery complemented the home’s existing décor and added to its charm. Our design team worked closely with the client to understand how they used the space, how many pairs of shoes and boots needed to be stored, and what style would best reflect the rest of the home’s interior.

We discussed several layout options before finalising a bespoke hallway storage solution that offered a perfect balance between function and aesthetics. The final design included a shoe storage bench with a solid oak top, integrated coat hooks above, and plenty of space for everyday items — creating both a practical boot room area and a beautiful visual feature.

Premium Materials

For this project, we used high-quality Hydro Hugo Moisturising MDF, which is the highest-grade MDF available on the market. This material is well known for its strength, moisture resistance, and smooth surface finish — ideal for hallways and boot rooms where durability and longevity are essential.

At our company, we take great pride in using only the best materials. Every component is selected for its performance and finish. Because we’re confident in the quality of our workmanship and materials, we provide a 12-year warranty with all our products. This assurance gives our clients peace of mind, knowing their investment will stand the test of time and everyday use.

Custom Colour Finish

The customer wanted a finish that would complement the surrounding décor, so we spray-painted the entire unit in-house to their chosen colour. We offer our clients a comprehensive colour chart with hundreds of options at no additional cost, allowing them full creative freedom when choosing their perfect shade.

Once the colour is selected, we use professional-grade, heavy-duty paint that’s mixed and applied in our spray workshop. This ensures a smooth, even finish that not only looks stunning but is also resistant to everyday wear and tear. Our in-house spraying process means we maintain complete control over the quality of the finish from start to end, ensuring each project leaves our workshop looking flawless.

Solid Oak Worktop & Coat Hooks

To bring warmth and natural beauty to the design, we fitted a 40mm solid oak worktop. Oak is one of our preferred materials — it’s strong, elegant, and ages beautifully. The natural wood grain adds character and contrasts beautifully against the painted joinery. The worktop also provides a practical surface for placing bags or decorative items.

Above the unit, we installed a row of sturdy coat hooks, offering convenient hanging space for coats, hats, and bags. This addition made the hallway even more functional, turning what was once an underused space into an organised and attractive feature within the home.

Detailed Design & Planning

Before cutting any material, we provided the client with a comprehensive CAD drawing, including both 2D and 3D visuals. This stage is crucial to our process, as it allows clients to clearly see what their finished project will look like.

We then arranged a follow-up Zoom consultation to go through every detail of the design. This is an important part of our customer experience — we make real-time adjustments together on the call, saving the client the frustration of long email exchanges and ensuring they feel completely confident before we begin manufacturing. Our customers consistently tell us how much they appreciate this transparent and collaborative approach.

Positive Response & Local Interest

Since completing this bespoke hallway project in Oxted, we’ve received numerous enquiries from new customers in nearby areas, including Brighton and Hove, who have seen our work and are keen to transform their own homes. We’ve already sent out several proposals and look forward to creating more custom joinery pieces inspired by this successful project.

Projects like this one highlight what we love most about what we do — creating handcrafted, made-to-measure joinery that blends beauty, functionality, and longevity, bringing our clients’ visions to life in the spaces they use every day.
